Painted-leaf begonia I'm 6 inch pot
"Painted leaf begonia" typically refers to varieties of Begonia rex, also known as Rex begonias. These begonias are prized for their strikingly colorful and patterned leaves rather than their flowers. Here's how to care for these beauties:
Light
 * They thrive in bright, indirect light. An east-facing window is often ideal.
 * Avoid direct sunlight, especially harsh afternoon sun, as it can scorch their delicate leaves. They can tolerate some morning sun.
 * Too little light can lead to leggy growth and duller leaf colors.
Water
 * Water regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist but not soggy.
 * Allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again.
 * Water from the bottom if possible to avoid getting water on the leaves, which can lead to fungal issues. You can place the pot in a saucer of water and let it soak up moisture for about 20 minutes, then drain any excess water.
 * Use pots with good drainage to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
 * Reduce watering slightly in the winter when the plant's growth slows down.
Humidity
 * Rex begonias appreciate high humidity, ideally around 50% or higher.
 * Increase humidity by using a pebble tray filled with water, grouping plants together, or using a humidifier.
 * Avoid misting hairy-leaved varieties as this can trap moisture and lead to problems.
Temperature
 * Maintain moderate temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C).
 * Protect them from drafts and sudden temperature changes. They are not frost-tolerant.
Soil
 * Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. A mix containing peat moss, perlite, or vermiculite is often suitable.
Fertilizer
 * Feed your painted leaf begonia with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer).
 * Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter.
Pruning
 * Generally require minimal pruning.
 * Pinch back leggy stems to encourage bushier growth.
 * Remove any dead or damaged leaves.
 * Deadhead spent flowers, although these begonias are primarily grown for their foliage.
Propagation
 * Easily propagated from leaf cuttings. You can cut a healthy leaf into wedges or smaller sections with veins and place them on moist potting mix, covering them with a clear plastic bag to maintain humidity until new plantlets form. Rhizome division is also possible during repotting.
Common Problems
 * Overwatering: Leads to root rot and fungal diseases. Ensure good drainage and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
 * Powdery mildew: A white, powdery fungus that can appear on leaves, often due to poor air circulation and high humidity. Improve air circulation and treat with a fungicide if necessary. Avoid getting water on the leaves.
 * Yellowing leaves: Can be a sign of overwatering, underwatering, or insufficient light. Adjust your care accordingly.
 * Brown, crispy edges: Often caused by low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Repotting
 * Repot in the spring when the plant becomes root-bound (roots circling the inside of the pot). Choose a pot only slightly larger than the previous one.
By providing the right conditions, your painted leaf begonia will reward you with its stunning and unique foliage.
