Cuphea hyssopifolia, commonly known as false heather, Mexican heather, Hawaiian heather, or elfin herb, is a small evergreen shrub native to Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. It has naturalized to Hawaii and is considered weedy there.
Â
It grows to about 60 cm (24 in) high by 90 cm (35 in) wide and has purple, lavender or white colored flowers and fine foliage. Its leaves are small, narrow and dark green. The fruit is a capsule that contains small globose seeds.
The Latin specific epithet hyssopifolia (which also occurs in several other plant names, including that of Bassia hyssopifolia) means "hyssop-leafed", referring to the fine, narrow leaves of that plant.
Cuphea hyssopifolia is a popular ornamental plant due to its attractive flowers and long blooming season. It is often used in borders, containers, and hanging baskets. It is also a good choice for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Cuphea hyssopifolia is a hardy plant that can tolerate a wide range of conditions. It prefers full sun but will also grow in partial shade. It is drought tolerant but will grow better with regular watering. It is also tolerant of most soil types but prefers well-drained soil.
Cuphea hyssopifolia can be propagated by cuttings or seeds. Cuttings should be taken in the spring or summer from soft, new growth. Seeds can be sown in the spring or fall.
Cuphea hyssopifolia is a relatively low-maintenance plant that is easy to grow. It is a great choice for adding color and interest to your garden.
